Overview and key concepts

"Making money online" sounds tempting and vague at the same time. It can mean ordinary professional work from home, or it can mean a scheme in which you are the one paying. To avoid confusing the two, it helps to understand a few basic concepts: who makes agreements with whom, on what terms, and who is responsible for what.

The internet is not a profession; it is a place where you can do your professional work.

What working online really means

Working online is the same work, except that communication with the client, file sharing and payments happen remotely. Writing, translation, development, design, bookkeeping, customer support, teaching: all of this exists both in the office and online.

Hence the main takeaway: there is no special "easy way" online that requires no skills. If an offer promises money without skills or effort, its real goal is probably to get something from you.

Legitimate ways to work

  • Remote work under an employment contract: you are an employee with an employer, a schedule and a salary; you simply do not work in an office.
  • Freelancing and project work: you complete individual projects for different clients, agreeing on each one.
  • Self-employment: a tax status for people who work for themselves; it helps you report income from independent work legally.
  • A combination: for example, a main job under contract plus small projects in your spare time.

Client, contractor and platform

The client sets the task and pays for the result; the contractor does the work. Sometimes a freelance platform sits between them: it helps them find each other and may also hold payment until the work is accepted and handle disputes, under its own rules and for a fee.

Working directly means no middleman, but then the contract, payment control and protecting your interests are up to you. Neither option is worse than the other; what matters is understanding who is responsible for what.

Contracts and payment

The foundation of stress-free work is written terms: exactly what needs to be done, by when, how many revisions the price includes, and how and when payment happens. This can be a signed contract or confirmed messages.

Common payment arrangements are a deposit, milestone payments and payment on delivery. The work is closed with a sign-off document or other written confirmation of acceptance, plus a receipt if you are self-employed.

Russia's professional income tax

This tax regime was introduced in Russia by Federal Law No. 422-FZ of 27.11.2018. The tax is 4% on income from individuals and 6% on income from sole proprietors and companies. It can be used while annual income does not exceed 2.4 million roubles.

Registration is available through the official app or website of the Federal Tax Service. Whether this regime suits you depends on your type of activity and circumstances, so check the tax authority's guidance. Rules differ by country — check your local tax office and financial regulator.
